ALECIA WHITAKER - biography

Alecia Whitaker is an actress and writer. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2002 with a BFA in Theatre and a BA in Inter-Strategic Communications (Copywriting), summa cum laude. Before graduating, she did summer stock for Minnesota Repertory Theatre (2000) and the following summer, worked as a copywriting intern for The Ad-Store in New York City. While in New York, she discovered a knack for performance poetry and found a niche at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was invited back as a featured poet on a return visit that winter.

She has since worked as an art advocate in gaining financial support from the Kentucky Senate, a high school recruit for the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA), and as a performer for the GSA audience of 350+ for the last two years. Most recently, she was appointed to a small panel (along with Ellen Hagan) to edit GSA’s first anthology, Where I’m From – a tool for teachers and students that will be placed in high school classrooms throughout Kentucky. She has self-published several booklets of poetry and monologue. Currently, she is working with a Cincinnati based agent to get local print and television work.

Her most prized accomplishment is her current tour of an original two-woman show funded in part by the Kentucky Foundation for Women and a GSA sponsored grant entitled Becoming Woman, a coming of age piece accompanied by a workshop for young high school women. The show was accepted into the New York International Fringe Festival and performed in Manhattan Aug. 13-29.
