BECOMING WOMAN Press Release
from the New York International Fringe Festival

"BECOMING WOMAN” JOINS THE NEW YORK
INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

The Hilarious Story of Two Southern Girls Growing Up in the 80’s

New York, N.Y., August 2004. “Becoming Woman”, written and performed by Ellen Hagan and Alecia Whitaker, has the distinct honor of being featured in the New York International Fringe Festival. The festival is the largest multi-arts festival in North America, with more than 200 companies from all over the world performing for 16 days in more than 20 venues.

In “Becoming Woman” we meet two Kentucky raised girls growing up in the 1980’s. The fast paced, fifty minute show is an honest, poignant comedy about girl’s formative years. Laugh out loud while Ellen and Alecia recall their junior high and high school experiences through the use of spoken word and monologues. The girls remember their adolescence and puberty, touching on subjects like wondering when their breasts would grow, first kisses, first loves, losing their virginity, not fitting in, and trying to get along with their parents. All of this takes place during the excessive 1980’s, and yes even in Kentucky it was excessive, big hair, bad fashions, bad music and all.
